Is a Catholic *permitted* to believe in (a) universalism; or, (b) Balthasar's "hopeful universalism"?

Is a Catholic *permitted* to believe in (a) universalism; or, (b) Balthasar's "hopeful universalism"? If Baron's explanation of what he means by hope is correct for Balthazar, then Balthazar is saying something relatively uninteresting that seems to be a mere positive corollary of "We don't want anybody to go to hell." If that's all it means, then not only is it permissible to hold, but it's likely impossible to avoid holding it.
